Beau 15-201

Profile

Please welcome handsome Beau to the RAGOM family. Beau is a blind, male Golden Retriever. He is going to be seen by a veteranarian ophthalmologist this month to see if there is any possibility of helping this beautiful guy regain some sight. He has some nerve damage to his hind right leg from an old injury that does not seem to bother him other than some twitching. The vet has no concerns about this.  He has no other medical conditions other than his blindness, and he has no bite history.

He is house trained and crate trained.  He is doing remarkably well moving around the house by following my voice, and also on his own. Beau lived with a small dog and cats, and is great with my 6 year old granddaughter.

He walks very well on a leash, and rides well in the car.  I have let him wander around my back yard supervised, and he goes slowly so if he bumps into anything he just moves around it.  He is so mellow, sweet and gentle, and such an easy dog to have around; he has become my shadow and goes wherever I go!  I'm sure that once he gets to know he's secure in the home, he'll be ok to just hang out by himself.

He sleeps on the floor next to my bed.  When he's in a good sleep pattern, his whole body is on a doggie marathon!  His legs go like everything, and I just imagine he's a sighted dog running in the park, chasing other dogs!  A good thought!   He is just a special, wonderful dog who would love a forever home.

In this "bleak midwinter," which seems never-ending, our hearts have been broken one more time. This morning we had to send our sweet boy Beau to the Rainbow Bridge.

It all happened so fast. Last week, we had him into the Vet's because he was having what we thought were digestive problems with an upset tummy and vomiting. His eating, drinking, and doing his jobs were doing fine but we were puzzled as to why this was coming on. After getting fluids and an anti-nausea shot, all seemed well over the weekend - play fights with his brother Tank, running around on the snowy driveway, etc.

Suddenly at 4:00 PM yesterday it all began to go wrong. He stopped eating and taking treats. The vomiting started last night and by early morning he couldn't/wouldn't move. We headed over to the Vet as early as we could. X-rays and ultrasound showed what appeared to be cancer. We decided that we didn't want him to have to endure any more pain.

Beau was our blind boy who came into RAGOM after he had had lost his sight and his surrendering owner couldn't cope with him. He was sweet, gentle, scared, brave, empathetic, and obnoxious, all at the same time.

His life was lived to the fullest whether it was barking at deer in the yard (how he smelled or heard them when he was inside we'll never know), playing fetch with his ball in the driveway, or his endless play/fights with his brother Tank. He greeted everyone happily at the door and just as happily managed to sniff out and find poop to eat, even under a foot of snow in the dead of winter.

We'll miss you sweet boy. Run free with all your friends, enjoying all of the sights you must have missed these last years.

Today is the first of what we hope are many “Gotcha” days for our Beau 15-201.  We lost our hearts to him the minute we first saw his picture on the RAGOM website.  When we met him, in spite of the fact that he was blind, we just knew that he would be a great resident dog for our fosters.

It’s been quite a year for Beau.  First, his good buddy and foster mentor Harley went off to the Rainbow Bridge leaving Beau to carry on alone.  Over the course of this year he helped two very scared retired breeder girls and one hyper-active former hoarder girl learn to be more confident dogs and to live in a house as part of a family.  They have all found great forever homes. Currently he is helping us care for a wonderful foster girl who is in Hospice Care.  Throughout it all he’s remained the kind, gentle soul we saw when we first met him.

A few months ago, the pressure in his non-functioning eyes began to cause him a lot of pain and he underwent major surgery to remove both eyeballs.  As with everything else in his life he’s just rolled with the punches and kept marching on!  We are so blessed that we have had the chance to love this wonderful boy!  Thank you RAGOM and thank you Marcia B for letting us adopt him!

Beau had a great time at Godzilla!  He interacted really well with all the dogs - loved the attention and loving from all the people - and walked around like a sighted dog!  He is such a sweetheart!  He's moving around the house much more comfortably now.  He walks on a leash very well, except when he gets the scent of another dog around.  Then he tends to pull a bit.  We've been doing 2 walks a day usually.  He's been wandering around in my yard and enjoying that freedom.  He goes up and down the steps with no problem.  He's eating pretty well, tho I do have to tempt him with a bit of canned dog food and sometimes some canned tuna!  He's not treat motivated, and is not really into playing with toys.  He has one squeaky toy bone that he likes, but isn't into chewing bones at this point.  He is such an easy dog to have around and such a lover!
