Jimi went in for her spay surgery on May 23rd as scheduled. The vet called me because as they were preparing her for surgery, they discovered that she had a level 5 (out of 6) heart murmur. He wouldn’t continue with the surgery without our approval of the risk. I talked with RAGOM’s medical expert, and we agreed to go with the vet’s recommendation.
He said since she had just had her puppies delivered via a c-section, they could monitor her during the surgery and go forward with it. She did fine during the surgery, and the vet said he had to clean up scar tissue and "black tissue." Evidently, she had more than one c-section delivery. Glad that he got that out of her!
Jimi came home with a tight bandage around her tummy since she had 2 surgeries within 6 weeks. She was the only dog I have had that didn’t mind the cone around her head. She learned to pick her head up so it didn’t get caught on things. What a good dog!
The vet referred Jimi to Blue Pearl for an echocardiogram so we would have a better understanding of the heart murmur. The results show that she has Subaortic Stenosis, which is a narrowing of the aortic valve.
She was prescribed Atenolol twice a day, which is a common solution. The vet said she won’t have restricted activity so hopefully she can live a normal life.
Jimi met a wonderful family who was looking for a companion for their female Golden. They fell in love with Jimi and have been waiting patiently to get the results of her tests. They visited her often during her spay recovery and heart tests.
Once we had the final results, she went to her furever home. She will live the Golden life with her new Mom and Dad, human brother, fur sister, and their cat (which was a new experience for Jimi, but she did great with it)! Her new name is Mika.
She has been enjoying another new experience with them—camping! I miss you Jimi/Mika, but I know you have selected a great family!

Jimi was surrendered by a commercial breeder because she had to have her 11 puppies delivered by caesarean section. RAGOM welcomed her with open arms. She is a beautiful purebred, 4-year-old light-colored Golden Retriever. She weighs 58 pounds and is super sweet.
She is scheduled to be spayed on May 23rd because she had to wait a month after her last surgery. No more puppies for this girl! Now onto the Golden life! Here she is on her ride to Freedom from Missouri. There were 16 puppies in the back of the SUV, so she got to ride shotgun.
Jimi doesn’t act like most other former breeder mamas because she isn’t afraid of people or other dogs. She met my resident dogs with no problem. Loud noises don’t seem to bother her, but she startles easily with quick movements.
She met a cat at a friend’s house and Jimi just sniffed it and walked away. I think Jimi would do better in a yard with a fence because she is constantly following her nose around the yard. She is enjoying her freedom!
She walked right into the house following my dogs. She does like to know where I am at if I am in another room of the house.
She used a crate in my house for the first week, but one time when I was gone for 30 min to the bank, she couldn’t see my resident dogs on the couch, so she thought she was home alone. When I came back, she greeted me at the door! I knew I had locked her in the crate, so here is what I found when I went into the house:
The plastic tray was kicked 3 feet away and she bent the crate frame and door up and somehow squeezed out through a 4 – 5-inch opening! So, after that I left the crate up with the door open. She would sleep in there with the door open.
She is not destructive, except to toys that have stuffing in them. She has never had an accident in my house. I took the crate down because she wanted to sleep by my dogs. Now she sleeps in bed with me.
Jimi walks right next to my leg when we walk, almost as if she was trained to stay close. She loves car rides and will sit up and look out the window for a while. My other former breeder dogs lay on the car floor on a blanket and won’t look out the window.
Jimi loves to chew on bones and will gather toys but hasn’t played with my dogs yet. Here are some other pictures of this sweetheart!
If you have a medium to large size confident resident dog that Jimi could follow and continue to learn from and think that she would be a great match for your family, please submit an "Inquiry for Application" form. She will need a home where she can learn at her own pace with a lot of patience.
