What a sweetie pie!!  He did great on his ride to my home.

He is 6 1/2 years old. He will be UTD and microchipped by the weeks end. He is about 75-80 lbs. and very gentle. He does well with other dogs. He has snuck out the front door and stayed by my home. Also he and our RD got out of the fenced in yard and went right to the front door. Very good at staying where he belongs.

He loves to play ball. He is a very bright boy and will do well with a loving family.

I am sad to say that our beloved rescue Windsor 12-209 passed on Feb 22nd from a diagnosed Lymphoma cancer. We loved him very much and the house is quite empty without him. No socks are carried outside, tennis balls lay dormant and the Suburban is idle without him to put his face out in the wind. Thank you for the chance to adopt Windsor and fill our home with happiness. We look forward to the next dog to fill our home once again with Golden love.

What a wonderful day.  This is what it’s all about…Windsor found his forever family!  We are so happy for him.  Larry and Kristie, I know how happy you are to have Windsor join your family.    Thank you for driving all the way to Sioux Falls to meet him.  Thank you for taking this beautiful boy into your home and showering him with all your love.  From our foster home to your forever home…wishing you lots of dog hugs and hours of fun playing ball.

My new family - Larry and Kristie

Looking forward to a RIDE with my new family.

From Foster Home to Forever Home...I'm so happy

Windsor had a very busy and adventuresome weekend.  Here are the highlights:

  • He traveled 600 miles round trip and rode fantastic!
  • He met foster grandmother’s sheltie-Sam and they got along great.
  • He weathered his first severe thunderstorm with us- we now know that he does pace/pant and looks for a dark, small space to lay down- under the desk, by the bathtub or next to an ottoman (the picture is him during the storm with Sam).  No damaging behavior.
  • He met young foster cousins (5-7-10) and played very well with them.  Fresh people to throw the tennis ball who had just as much stamina as he did.
  • He has no clue what a Frisbee is…give me a tennis ball
  • He handled 14 people and 2 other dogs in a very small space for 4 days-even sharing a water dish didn’t bother him
  • He handled an unfenced yard with a supervised tie-out like a champ.
  • He is going to make some lucky family a wonderful companion.

It’s been two weeks since Windsor arrived. We’ve gotten a little braver and have been trying new interactions with him. We trialed him in our front yard on a long trailing leash. He had no desire to leave the front yard, even when the neighbor kids rode their bikes past us.

In fact, what he really wanted to do was go for a R-I- D- E.  He patiently waited, but no ride that night.

On these hot summer days, his favorite spot for a nap is on the tile floor.  Of course, he has his favorite toy with him everywhere he goes.

He continues to walk nicely with his gentle leader.  We tried his flat collar and does pull more on that, but not too bad.  He has encountered many neighbor kids the past few days and seems really bored by them unless they will throw a tennis ball for him.  He seems to think this is “his house” and has a protective growl/bark when there is a male at the front door or in the neighbor’s yard that he has not met.  However, he politely sat when told and interacted quite well with our visitors.  With treats, I’ve been giving them to him only after he sits and then I tell him “nice” and he slowly takes it from my hand.  What a sweetie.  He has the run of the house and is completely trustworthy.  No trials with cats yet and with no storms, no assessment of his storm anxiety.  So what do we think Windsor needs from his forever family…

  • A yard big enough to throw tennis balls and the willingness to do this a couple times a day
  • Older children
  • Older companion dog
  • Lots of love and willingness to return hugs (he sometimes forgets that he isn’t a lap dog when you sit on the floor and he gives hugs)

Windsor is a 6 ½ year old, tall, red, neutered male who is housebroken. During Windsor’s first week with us he was treated for Giardia and ear infections. We have completed the course of medications and he is doing great. He does have some storm anxiety and will pant/pace when there is a storm.

We’ve learned a few other things about Windsor in this very short period of time.  He is a wonderfully loving boy who is so willing to trust this new family and resident dog. Each day you can see him relax more and ease back into that wonderful Golden Life he once knew. He has developed a great bond with our 21 year old son- sleeping on a pillow in his room and waiting by the door when he hears him come home. He LOVES to play ball and gets so much out of a quick game of “throw the tennis ball”. He knows his name, comes when he is called, sits beautifully, shakes and will lie down when told to. He thoroughly loves a big hug. He walks well with a gentle leader and didn’t even chase a bunny or go for a dead bird he found on the sidewalk. He loved his bath in the back yard and enjoys a good brushing. He loves to go for a ride in the car. He prefers to have the run of the house over his crate or being baby gated. He’s proven to be trustworthy in the house when we are not home- completely house broken and no marking. He doesn’t “counter surf” or beg for food, even if you are eating on the couch in front of him in the family room.

Windsor is getting along great with our resident dog Loosey. She was rescued from a local shelter 4 years ago. We don’t have cats, so we don’t know how he will do with them. Windsor is a tall boy so due to his size, he may be better with a little older child(ren). He is bonding very quickly with our boys who are 19 & 21 (as are they to him). These boys realize what a great dog he is and how lucky he will be to find his new family.

You can see by the pictures how well he does with simple commands like “Sit”, “Lay Down” and “Shake”.
