Katy 10-092

Profile

Katy is a gorgeous 5 ½ year old PB golden. She was surrendered due to financial problems and is living here in South Dakota. Katy has been with us a couple days and is doing fantastic.

Here is what we know at this time:

  • She was an only dog at her prior home since last August; she was adopted from the local shelter here in Sioux Falls, SD at that time
  • She is a reddish golden with beautiful feathering and approximately 80#
  • She is spayed, UTD and micro-chipped
  • She is currently on an antibiotic for a hot spot and also ear meds
  • She gets along with all dogs
  • She gets along with all cats
  • She has no aggressions
  • She rides well/great in a car
  • She loves people and attention

Katy is a totally incredible girl. She is a typical golden who loves attention and wants to be petted. She enjoys being brushed. We have not had her but a couple days now but she is great. Before coming into Ragom, she was an only dog for the past 8-9 months (since –July August 2009). Prior to that it is my understanding she lived with a family who had children. She was surrendered the first time due to ‘no time for her’ and this last time (current) was due to financial hardship(s). Since she has been in our foster care, she has enjoyed the ‘pack’ we have. 3 dogs and 3 cats. Katy is fine with all of them. If nothing else, a little shy. She has no aggressions or obsessions. Katy is a real wonderful golden! She knows sit, stay, ‘crawl’ when to come and get a treat. She knows commands and listens very well. We do not know her all that well but she is one very smart girl! I truly think she really enjoys having other dog(s) around and would rather have at least a companion canine for her future. She takes treats nicely. She is very good to go ‘outside’ and go potty and then come in and ‘wait’ on the rug. She really wants to be by humans…..

I took Katy on a walk today and she did fine for a few blocks and then stopped---I really believe she is quite worried and apprehensive at this time of new surroundings, etc. and is a little scared yet of a new neighborhood, etc.. When we did walk, she walked just beautiful and I feel she is worried once again about being left. [As always, I used a harness.] I feel there has been much change in her past and she needs a very stable environment, with not a lot of changes.

Katy comes back when called and is fine in our yard with a fence. However, I do feel she will be fine without a fence[once she has her confidence and loyalties in place]. (She listens very well). We will have a vet visit in a couple days to re-check everything. Her prior owner stated she may have allergies but we are not sure of that. She is currently being treated with an antibiotic for a hot spot and drops for ear infection. More to come on that but she is basically all healed up and appears to be doing fine—we will know more soon. She takes her meds just fine. Katy is really enjoying another dog and companionship. She is a real lovely girl to foster. What a stunning golden! More to come………

With great sorrow we had to help our wonderful girl Katie (10-092) to the meadows and hills of the Rainbow Bridge on August 4, 2017.  Our thanks go to Dr. Therese Schneider and Pam, Carrie and Maggie at the Grand Rapids Veterinary Clinic, Grand Rapids, MN for their kind and compassionate care at this sad time.

Katie came to us meek and withdrawn but she blossomed into an outgoing girl that liked to relax on the couch, go on walks, wade in the lake, ride in the car, and make new friends wherever she went, all the while staying close to her fur buddy Jack (07-350), whom she absolutely adored.

In recent weeks Katie seemed to slow down.  After she fell on some steps and developed a severe limp, an examination revealed cancer in her leg and in several organs.  To spare further suffering we decided to ease her pain.

Jack misses her as do we.  There is an empty place in our hearts and in our home.

It is some comfort to know that after she lived in two former houses, we were able to give her a warm and happy forever home.  She repaid us many times over with her love and devotion.  She had a goofy walk when she was glad to see family and friends and was able to grow into a carefree, happy girl.

Thanks to Rona and RAGOM, and to Joyce, for matching Katie with us too few years ago.

The attached picture is Katie sharing peanut butter with Jack.

We hope this update on Katie and Jack (07-350) will find its way to you.  We know that you remain interested in the welfare your former foster dogs.

Both continue to thrive and enjoy their laid-back life style.  Katie has blossomed and those who knew her 'way back when, still marvel at how far she has come.  She is quite the social girl and does not hesitate to meet and greet new people now, where as before she needed a little coaxing to initiate contact. Now it is a competition between her and Jack as to who can get to people first.  Trips to the lumberyard and the drive-thru bank are favorites because of the treats.  Her ear problems are still present but under control as are her allergies.  She is around 75 pounds and has a nice waistline.  Jack is in the low 80's, but a long way from the 100+ when we got him.

We are attaching some recent photos, which unfortunately show their greying muzzles..... just like the rest of us!

Both Katie and Jack love peanut butter -- it looks disgusting but you can see that they willingly share without any disagreements.  After playing, they do get "dog tired", and can usually be found sleeping next to or very close to each other, usually with a selection of plush toys.

Katie continues to do well.  We medicate her ears regularly and she has not had a significant infection in some time.  Her food allergy seems to be doing better with the help of sensitive system food that we are able to order on line.  We have to address some outdoor allergies that bother her from time to time and in different ways (and places) but controlling the food allergy has really made a difference.  She had not had hot spot for many months, but now that warm and humid weather has returned, she is worrying her back leg again so we have to stay on top of it and keep the area dry and medicated.  Earlier this month we went to the veterinarian for Lyme disease vaccinations and a quick checkup.  The vet said Katie and Jack both are healthy and well-adjusted.

Her confidence has greatly increased and she enthusiastically greets everyone, including men.  Our other Golden, Jack (07-350), is probably the main reason for this as he is a bold, outgoing guy and Katie follows his lead.  Occasionally, though, Dave will inadvertently do something that startles her and she will cringe and go to her safe spot on the couch.  An unexpected move with a broomstick or something similar in his hand is the usual cause.  It makes us all feel bad but with some soothing words and a pat or two she is soon back to normal.  We are still working with her on loud noises like thunder and fireworks.

We realize that it must have been hard to give up such a nice girl, and we are doing our best to give Katie a good home.  The continuing veterinary visits, various medications, and her special food, while not exorbitant, are additional care that we are glad we are able to provide.

We’re sending along some new pictures.  Getting pictures of them doing cute things is almost impossible as they stop whenever the camera comes out.  As a result, most of our pictures involve them sleeping or wrestling.  The wrestling includes much baring of teeth but it’s all play and no one gets their feelings hurt.  Then, they get “dog tired” and go for a little couch time.  They both enjoy their walks and doing their chores, such as taking out the trash, getting the mail, and keeping squirrels off the bird feeders.  However, there is no doubt that they are inside dogs!

Thanks for the work you do with RAGOM.

Katie has been with us for four weeks and she is thriving.  All of her medical issues have been taken care of and she is very active and enjoying life here at the lake.  As this is being written, Katie and her RAGOM brother Jack (07-350) are vying for possession of a plush toy.  When one gets clear control, the other will find another toy and the game will resume with the new one until both parties are "dog tired."  Our Loofas are all missing ears and legs and have many stitches!  For some reason, the rope toys just aren't as interesting.  Jack was a little pouty when Katie first arrived, but now they are best friends.  Katie, Jack, and David take a daily walk and the excitement usually means a rough and tumble game of tag before the walk has gone very far.  Katie has met most of the dogs on the route and she is perfectly behaved with all of them.  Just like Jack, Katie is delighted to meet others on the walk and seems convinced that everyone is there just to pet her.  She has begun accompanying Jack and David on errands and a favorite stop is the lumber yard where the treats and pats are always in good supply.  We are in Northern Minnesota so even though the snow and lake ice are long gone, the lake is still very cold.  The dock was installed yesterday and after a cautious approach, Katie was running up and down like a veteran.  The waves were something new, though, which reminded us of Jack's early lake exposure.  As the weather warms and we spend more time in and near the water, we will send more updates.

Katy has now found her forever home. One of the most wonderful homes with the W family! She also has a new brother, Jack, who is 6 and a Ragom boy himself. This is just one of the most wonderful adoption/matches ever. She will be very well taken care of and have someone with her all the time and a ton of room to play and go swim. This is one of the most fantastic families----and their golden boy, Jack, and Katy, are definitely going to be best buddies. Katy will be so very happy and that is what matters. Doesn’t get better than this! Again, this family came prepared, experienced and also came a very long way to adopt this wonderful golden girl. Good preparation, patience, research and knowledge all pay off. I am so very happy and again, love fostering! We meet the best dogs and the best people!

Katy continues to do wonderful! She had her vet check yesterday. We are HW negative and have had frontline and heartgard. She weighs 83# and is a just right weight for her. ( She is a taller girl ) So we are all UTD and good to go.

She continues to amaze us as to what a great golden she is, so gentle, quiet (never hear her bark); gets along with everyone, just super. (3 dogs and 3 cats). We can tell from the vet check yesterday there was neglect early on and allergy/ear infections and never taken care of. Her right ear has some scar tissue and some scarring will remain but her health is fine. She is in great shape, was super at the vet and everyone loved and admired her!

We so enjoy fostering this lovely gal. I cannot say enough how wonderful she is—not to mention a total beauty. Katy is a great foster guest in our home and she is so beautiful (inside and out). Just love having her here. Enjoy her new photos…. J
